A new knitting book

I received a new book in the mail the other day. It's called "Domiknitrix", by Jennifer Stafford. It has a black vinyl cover. Cool.

At first I thought it had to do with punk and goth knitting. But then I found out that it's really about getting a good handle on my knitting, no matter what my style of dressing is. Whew! That's a relief! And then I cracked open the book and techniques with step-by-step instructions and pictures or every step. That's good. And not let the yarn dominate me, not let the stitches dominate me, not let the whole thing overwhelm me. Okay. I don't usually have that problem, but sometimes I do.

And then I saw the projects. Interesting. Different. Goth-looking, some good for Halloween, some good for every day. Each with a box that says what knitting technique will be learned while making the pattern. That's good for me. With a change of color and motif, I could use these. So, all in all, not a bad book so far. I haven't sat down with it seriously yet, but I think it will prove to have been a good purchase.

There was a rash of "punk" looking knitting books in the bookstore last fall. I picked up a couple of them and had to laugh at some of the pictures and projects. Weird, just weird. Macho looking tattoed women in lots of leather and chains and really tiny clothing knitting fishnet stockings, head bands with skulls on them and odd sleeves with no bodice attached. So when this one appeared I just passed on by and didn't give it a look at all. Just goes to show you that first impressions aren't always correct and an open mind is a priceless possession.

I just picked up an amigurumi book, just by way of comparison. A little on the polar ends of things, aren't we?

You know, I'm not really into the goth look. Even though these projects are mostly done in black with red, white, or pink colorwork, if they were a different color, they'd be very cool. I do NOT plan to make the mohawk hat, unless someone wants a Halloween costume topper, but there are some sweaters in there that are cool, even if the model has flames tattooed on her arms. And I need short rows explained, along with some other techniques that I know I'm doing wrong, so this will be good, regardless of the presentation.
